BBC Alpine Saturday 4th December 2010

BBC Alpine CenterOn Saturday 4 December, Alpine Center’s 2010 Student Council undertook a Green environmental initiative in conjunction with a fundraising event for the Smile of the Child Foundation, a non-governmental charity organisation, aiming to protect children who have been abused, neglected or abandoned. This organisation was established for the last 15 years ago and successfully continues to operate through the whole of Greece.

Alpine Center has an ideal location adjacent to the beach and recently we’ve noticed an increase in the amount of litter gathering there. In an effort to address the issue we decided to take action to save our beaches and do a cleanup. Many of us students, decked-out in unique t-shirts, designed by Alpines own Rhonda Leung and kindly digitalised by a friend of Alpine, Tatiana Abou Ghazaleh), spent approximately over two hours returning the beach to pristine condition. The cleanup was followed by a beach BBQ and drinks accompanied with live music from our resident student DJ Lambros Vakiaros. Close to Sundown we constructed and set alight a fantastic looking bonfire erected in the style of the matchstick man, which added great excitement and contributed to a very fantastic and successful event.

All proceeds from this event through the selling of food, drinks, and t-shirts were presented to “The Smile of the Child” representatives on Friday the 10th of December. This was the first of its kind and we are all looking forward to repeating this as a tradition in the coming years.
