Children are curious and are risk takers. They have lots of courage. They venture out into a world that is immense and dangerous. A child initially trusts life and the processes of life. (John Bradshaw)
On Sunday 5th of December 2010, some of the culinary arts students from Alpine Center, Constantinos Symeonidis, Argiris Aglamisis, Glory Sakellaridi, Achilleas Papakostas and Yiannis Saaboun, headed by Yana Garbuz, volunteered to cook for one of the “The Smile of the Child” houses located in Marousi, Athens. This is a non-governmental charity organisation, aiming to protect children who have been abused, neglected or abandoned. This organisation has been established for the last 15 years and successfully continues to operate through the whole of Greece.
All the Alpine students took part in this event by collecting food items for children, moreover, collecting money for this organisation as it does not have any government support.
The main idea of the visit was to prepare a nutritious lunch for 30 children aged from four months up to thirteen years old, to bring yummy gifts (cookies) and to try to bring a smile to their faces. In the end, all of our efforts were rewarded by watching children happily eating food, smiling all the time and being excited spending time with us. Despite having faced real adversity these strive for their brighter, more prosperous future, for the future of all of us! That was the most memorable visit we have ever experienced. And the children were so thankful for everything we offered, that when we were in the kitchen some of them were coming and just hugged us without saying anything.
